We are excited to featured Sarah Landa and her beautiful fine art today! Welcome Sarah!
I have a 50mm 1.2 legacy lens from an old Nikon. I attach this to my Canon DSLR via a $35 converter ring
I use this lens almost exclusively.
Favorite tip for turning a regular portrait situation into fine art:
I try to bring fine art to every shoot I do. I do this in many ways but probably my favorite is freelensing
I’m fairly new to it so it can be hit and miss, but it’s fun to play and keeps me inspired.
Favorite age to photograph:
Usually whatever age my kids are right now because I’m the most practiced at it but I love every age.
Favorite trick for photographing children:
The best is when they don’t know they are being photographed. I like to talk to them and play with them to the point that they almost forget the camera. I’ve brought bubbles to a few shoots, particularly good for 1-2 year olds who just want to run around.
Favorite trick for children who won’t cooperate:
I’m not above bribery, I always have suckers in my bag for the kids who are just not in the mood for pictures.
Favorite tip for shooting closeup portraits:
A long lens is handy so you don’t have to get all up in their grill. I have an 85mm 1.8 that I usually carry for this purpose.
Favorite photography advice:
Practice! Shoot every day, shoot your kids, shoot your friends. Go outside of your comfort zone. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Try new tricks and throw the images away. Just practice.
Favorite photographer inspiration:
I like to go back to the greats. Many an afternoon has been spent on the floor in the stacks at the library pouring through photography books. Mostly BW film photographers. Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sally Mann, Vivian Maier, Cindy Sherman, Francesca Woodman…
Favorite type of location to shoot:
Outdoors in nature, in the trees, or at the beach.
Favorite image ever and why:
My favorites are always of my kids, and even better when they are both in the frame. This is of my twins, Tanner and Ruby, shot in our backyard. I probably bribed them with cookies. I love their connection. It is theirs alone, they are best friends.
